Mastering Unit Synthesis in Monster Train
The The Last Divinity DLC for Monster Train introduced Unit Synthesis (Essence Fusion), fundamentally changing how decks are built. Instead of relying on standard unit upgrades, you can sacrifice one unit to transfer its core mechanical essence into another, creating a game-breaking super-unit.
How Essence Stats Work
When you sacrifice a unit at a Divine Temple, the Host unit does not gain the sacrificed unit's full base stats. Instead, it gains a specific set of "Essence Stats" and the unit's core ability.
Final Attack = Host Base Attack + Essence Attack Bonus
Final Health = Host Base Health + Essence Health Bonus
Final Capacity = Host Capacity + 1 (Standard Essence Cost)
Capacity Management
The biggest drawback to Unit Synthesis is Capacity. Fusing an essence into a unit almost always increases that unit's capacity cost by +1. If you fuse a strong essence into a Demon Fiend (which already costs 3 capacity), the resulting unit will cost 4 capacity. This means you will need specific boss relics (like Light's Gift) or capacity-increasing spells just to play your newly created monster on a standard floor.
Can I fuse a Champion?
No. Champions (like the Hornbreaker Prince or Sentient) cannot be used as a Host for an essence, nor can they be sacrificed to become an essence for another unit.
Does Multistrike transfer?
Yes! If the sacrificed unit's essence naturally grants Multistrike (like the Animus of Will), the Host unit will gain Multistrike. This is one of the most powerful and sought-after fusions in the game, allowing slow, heavy-hitting units to attack multiple times per turn.
