Decoding the Reverse: 1999 Damage Engine

Combat in Reverse: 1999 relies on maximizing several multiplicative layers of damage. Unlike games where stacking one stat linearly increases your output, Reverse: 1999 rewards balanced builds that factor in Defense penetration, Afflatus superiority, and critical scaling via Resonance.

The Core Damage Formula

The foundation of all damage in the game is a simple subtraction: Your Arcanist's ATK minus the target's Reality or Mental DEF. However, the game enforces a minimum damage floor (usually around 10% of your ATK) so you never hit for zero.

Raw Base: Max(ATK - DEF, ATK × 0.1)
Final Damage: Raw Base × (Skill%) × (Afflatus) × (1 + Dmg Bonus%) × (Crit Multiplier)

Afflatus Advantage: The 1.3x Multiplier

The elemental rock-paper-scissors system (Beast > Plant > Star > Mineral > Beast) is not just a suggestion; it is the most vital mechanic for hard content like Limbo. Attacking with an Afflatus advantage applies a flat 1.3x (or +30%) multiplier to your final damage. Because this multiplier applies *after* all other additions, it provides a massive spike to your DPS.

When to Build Critical Damage

Critical Hits deal bonus damage based on your Critical Damage stat (Base is 130%). However, stacking Critical Damage via Resonance is mathematically inefficient unless your Critical Rate is reliably high. For characters like Lilya or Regulus who possess massive built-in Crit Rate buffs, investing heavily into Critical Damage yields the highest Expected Average Damage in the game.
