Guardian Tales Damage Mechanics Explained
Maximizing your DPS in Guardian Tales requires understanding how different stats interact. The in-game "DPS" stat shown on a hero's profile is often misleading because it does not account for elemental matchups, specific enemy defense values, or party buff synergy.
The Defense Formula (Mitigation)
Guardian Tales uses a standard non-linear defense formula common in many gacha and RPG games. This prevents defense stacking from making characters completely invincible.
Example: If a Raid Boss has 300 Defense:
100 / (100 + 300) = 100 / 400 = 0.25.
The boss will take exactly 25% of your incoming damage, meaning 75% is mitigated.
Elemental Advantage
Elemental advantage is the most powerful standalone multiplier in the game. If your hero has an elemental advantage (e.g., Earth vs Water), your final damage is multiplied by 1.3x (+30%). If you are at a disadvantage, it is multiplied by 0.7x (-30%). Because this multiplier applies to the entire damage calculation, using a slightly weaker on-element hero is almost always better than using your strongest off-element hero in Raids.
Critical Hits & Expected Damage
Crit Chance is vital for consistent damage. By default, a critical hit deals +100% bonus damage (meaning it doubles your hit). If you use party buffs or equipment to add "+100% Crit Damage," your critical hits now deal +200% bonus damage (triple damage). The "Average Expected Damage" in our calculator mathematically blends your Normal Hit and Critical Hit based on your percentage chance to trigger it, giving you the most accurate representation of your sustained DPS over a long fight.
Do Melee/Ranged buffs apply before or after Defense?
Party buffs like "+50% Melee Damage" modify your hero's Base Attack stat. This happens at the very beginning of the damage pipeline, before elemental multipliers or defense mitigation are calculated.
Can I reduce an enemy's defense below 0?
No. Defense reduction debuffs (like Kamael's or Lilith's) are crucial for increasing raid damage, but they cannot drop a boss's defense into the negative to amplify damage. They only bring the mitigation percentage closer to 0%.
