About This Advanced Tool
This professional yarn yardage calculator outperforms typical single‑formula tools by supporting three real‑world planning paths: Swatch unravel method, Gauge stitch/row method, and Weight‑based estimation. You can optionally model multi‑piece garments (front, back, sleeves, panels) and apply smart buffers. Input skein yardage and weight to instantly determine how many skeins to purchase, reducing both overbuying and mid‑project shortages. Everything happens locally in your browser (privacy‑friendly, no tracking) and you can save, load, share or print a snapshot for your project notebook.
How to Use
- Select a Method: Swatch (most accurate if you can measure yarn used), Gauge (fast—when you know stitches & rows per gauge square), or Weight (use a scale + label data).
- Add Pieces (Optional): Build complex garments. If no pieces are added the width × height fields are used.
- Enter Inputs: Provide only fields relevant to your chosen method; unused methods retain their values for later.
- Add Buffer: 10–20% covers tension shifts, seaming, swatching, and future repairs.
- Calculate & Review: Examine base, buffer, total skeins, and (for weight method) total grams.
- Copy / Share / Print: Use action buttons for pattern notes, sharing with collaborators, or archiving.
Pro Tips for Accuracy
- Block Your Swatch: Always block if the final piece will be blocked—dimensions shift.
- Same Stitch Pattern: Cables, brioche & textured stitches consume more yarn—swatch in pattern.
- Time vs. Yarn: For gauge method, if yarn per 100 stitches is unknown, knit 100 stitches, unravel & measure once.
- Mixed Pieces: Use the piece builder for cardigans & raglan shaping (approximate with rectangles).
- Leftover Strategy: If dye lot risk is high, round up an extra skein beyond the buffer.
