About the Wangan Midnight Calculator
The Wangan Midnight Calculator is a free, all-in-one tool suite built specifically for players of Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune (WMMT), the legendary arcade racing game by Bandai Namco. Whether you're grinding story mode to reach full tune, optimizing your Time Attack settings, or planning how many credits it takes to unlock the Carbon Tachometer, this calculator gives you precise, community-verified data at your fingertips.
This tool supports both WMMT 6RR (and 6R/6) as well as WMMT 5DX/5DX+, covering the most popular versions found in arcades worldwide. Every number is sourced from verified community data, wiki resources, and experienced player feedbackโno guesswork involved.
How It Works
The calculator is divided into five specialized tools, each addressing a specific aspect of WMMT progression:
- Tuning Progress Calculator: Enter your completed story missions and car source type to see your current estimated HP, how many missions remain until full tune, and your completion percentage with a visual progress bar.
- Optimal Course Settings: Browse a complete reference table of recommended HP and gear settings for every course in Time Attack mode, filterable by course type and game version.
- Tachometer Tracker: Visualize your tachometer unlock journey from Stock through Yellow, Red, Blue, Carbon, and Pro Meter with streak tracking and milestone calculations.
- Dress Up Level Calculator: Calculate exactly how many ghost trophies and arcade sessions you need to reach your target dress-up level, with a detailed XP breakdown by level tier.
- Cost Estimator: Input your local arcade credit price and goals to get a realistic estimate of total plays and money needed for full tune, tachometers, and beyond.
How to Use
- Select your game version โ WMMT 6RR or 5DX+ โ as max HP, mission counts, and tachometer requirements differ between versions.
- Enter your current progress such as missions completed, current tach level, or dress-up level. All inputs include inline tooltips explaining what each value means.
- Click Calculate to see your results instantly. Results include numerical outputs, visual progress bars, and actionable insights.
- Share or export your results using the copy, share link, or CSV export buttons. The share link saves your inputs in the URL so you can bookmark or send it to friends.
Tips & Best Practices
Tuning Efficiently
Focus on clearing story missions without repeating completed ones โ repeated missions do not advance your tuning meter. If you fail a mission, you must clear it before progressing. Discard cards skip the first 20 missions and start at 600 HP, saving significant time.
Course Settings for Time Attack
The optimal HP/gear combos listed are for solo Time Attack runs and balance speed versus handling for each track. For VS battles and other modes, these settings may not apply since cars behave differently when competing against other players. Highway courses like Wangan Line benefit from maximum HP (840/DG), while technical loops like C1 and Kobe require lower HP with more grip.
Tachometer Grinding
Each tachometer requires 100 consecutive story wins (60 in 5DX). A single loss resets your streak for that tier โ but completed tiers act as checkpoints. Consider playing easier difficulty or familiar routes when on a long streak. The visual tracker helps you see exactly where you stand.
Saving Money at the Arcade
Use the Cost Estimator before starting a new car to budget realistically. Full tune alone requires 79 plays in WMMT 6RR. If you also want the Yellow Tachometer, that adds approximately 21 more plays (100 total from first mission to Yellow). Each subsequent tach tier requires another 100 plays minimum.
Common Mistakes
- Repeating same missions: Many new players repeat a single story mission thinking it advances tuning โ it does not. You must clear each unique mission sequentially.
- Wrong HP for courses: Running max HP on technical courses like C1 Inward or Kobe will make your car slide out on corners. Use the Course Settings tab to find the right balance.
- Ignoring streak resets: Losing once during a tach grind doesn't mean you have to finish the current story loop before restarting. However, in 5DX, you must complete the full run before starting a new clean attempt.
- Thinking car choice matters competitively: In VS battles and most game modes, performance differences between cars are negligible. Skill is the deciding factor. Car differences only matter in Time Attack where fractions of a second count.
- Confusing cosmetic with performance: Body kits, dress-up parts, neons, and aero parts are purely aesthetic. They do not affect performance at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
You need to complete 79 unique story missions without failing to reach the maximum 840 HP. Each failed mission must be replayed successfully before you can move on. Repeating already completed missions does not progress your tuning.
In WMMT 6RR (also 6R and 6), the maximum is 840 HP. In WMMT 5DX and 5DX+, the maximum is 830 HP. Full Tune tickets from the Wangan Navigator app also grant max HP instantly.
In WMMT 6RR: complete 100 story missions in a row without losing. In WMMT 5DX: complete 60 missions from beginning to end of story without failing. Each unlocked tachometer acts as a checkpoint โ losing after unlocking Yellow means you only need to redo wins from yellow onward to reach Red.
For VS battles and most modes, differences are negligible โ skill matters most. For Time Attack, minor differences exist: GT-Rs have about 1 km/h higher top speed (matters on Wangan), and RX-7s have slightly better speed recovery on technical tracks like Hakone.
It varies significantly by course. Highway courses use max HP with drift gears, while technical courses use lower HP with grip gears. Use the Course Settings tab in this calculator for a complete, version-specific reference table with all courses.
You earn 100 XP per ghost trophy won in ghost battles (50 XP if you lose). XP requirements increase with level: Levels 1-5 need 100 XP each, up to Levels 54-67 which need 1500 XP each. Taking all local crown positions awards 1000 bonus XP (10 trophies).
