How the Torn Plunder Algorithm Works
Understanding the math behind mugging is crucial for any aspiring Torn City pirate. The amount you plunder is not random luck—it follows a strict formula based on your victim's cash on hand and your specific modifiers.
The Mugging Formula
When you successfully mug a target, the game first calculates a Base Roll. For a "fresh" target (someone who hasn't been mugged recently), this roll is typically between 5% and 10% of their wallet amount.
Your bonuses are then applied to this base amount additively. The standard formula estimation is:
Does Plunder Stack with Merits?
Yes. The Plunder Weapon Bonus is one of the most powerful modifiers because it allows you to break the standard "soft caps" of mugging.
For example, if you have 10/10 Masterful Looting (+50%) and a specialized melee weapon with 25% Plunder:
- Total Bonus: 75% increase on the base yield.
- Result: Instead of taking 10% max, you can take up to 17.5% of the victim's total cash. On a $1 Billion target, that's an extra $75 million profit per hit.
Remember that mugging a target repeatedly triggers "Mug Protection." The first hit yields full value. Subsequent hits yield drastically diminishing returns. Always aim for fresh targets or wait for protection to decay.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring Faction Perks: Many Criminality factions offer passive mug boosts. Don't overlook these when calculating expected returns.
- Buying Low-Quality Plunder Weapons: A low % Plunder weapon might not justify the cost vs. a higher damage weapon. Use this calculator to see if the ROI makes sense.
- Forgetting to Refresh: Result estimates assume the target currently holds the cash specified. In Torn, cash moves fast!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum possible mug percentage?
While the base maximum is 10%, with fully maxed Merits (+50%), Faction Perks (e.g., +25%), Company specials, and a god-tier Plunder weapon, players have reported mugging over 20-25% of a victim's wallet in a single hit.
Does Education affect mugging?
Education courses generally increase your Crime Success Rate (Experience), but they do not directly increase the monetary yield of mugs. Focus on Merits and Weapons for cash yield.
