Starve.io Tech Tree & Progression Guide
Survival in Starve.io isn't just about managing your hunger and heat meters; it's about efficient resource management. Crafting top-tier weapons and gear takes an immense amount of raw materials, and new players often underestimate the hidden costs of progression.
Our Starve.io Crafting Calculator solves this by calculating your exact "From-Spawn" costs. If you want a Diamond Sword, the calculator doesn't just tell you the sword's cost—it factors in the Wood Pickaxe, Stone Pickaxe, Gold Pickaxe, and Workbench you must build along the way to physically mine those diamonds.
Core Progression Tiers
1. The Wooden/Stone Age (Early Game)
Your immediate priority upon spawning is to punch trees for Wood. With 15 Wood, you craft a Wood Pickaxe. This allows you to mine stone. Your next major milestone is gathering 40 Wood and 20 Stone to build a Workbench. The Workbench is the foundation of all advanced crafting in Starve.io; without it, you cannot progress to Stone, Gold, or Diamond gear.
2. The Gold/Diamond Age (Mid to Late Game)
Starve.io features strict mining dependencies. A Stone Pickaxe can mine Gold, but it cannot mine Diamond. Therefore, you are forced to climb the tech tree step-by-step. Upgrading to a Gold Pickaxe requires 15 Wood and 30 Gold, which unlocks the ability to harvest Diamonds. Always factor in these "Pickaxe Taxes" when planning to build a high-tier base.
3. Base Building Mechanics (Wood Walls & Fires)
Surviving the night requires heat, and surviving predators (and players) requires walls. A basic Campfire costs 30 Wood and 5 Stone. Wood Walls and Spikes cost 10 Wood each. A simple 3x3 starter base with a fire can easily drain over 150 Wood. Use the sliders in the calculator above to plan out exactly how many trees you need to chop before the sun sets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I lose my previous pickaxe when I craft a new one?
No, you do not "consume" the previous pickaxe during crafting. However, since you start with nothing, the calculator includes the cost of crafting the previous pickaxes because you mathematically cannot harvest high-tier ores without them.
What is the highest tier gear in Starve.io?
Amethyst is generally considered the highest standard tier above Diamond. Crafting Amethyst gear requires finding the rare purple ores in the cave or winter biomes and requires a Diamond Pickaxe to harvest.
How much does it cost to build a full Diamond setup?
Assuming you are starting completely from scratch (and accounting for all prerequisite pickaxes and a workbench), a full Diamond setup (Pickaxe, Sword, Helmet) will cost you exactly 140 Wood, 60 Stone, 60 Gold, and 120 Diamonds.
