The Ultimate Starfield Build Planner
Welcome to the Settled Systems, Spacefarer!
Starfield's universe is a vast, open-ended sandbox of exploration, conflict, and discovery. At the very center of this grand adventure is you. The character you create is your lens for experiencing everything the game has to offer. Your journey begins with a few crucial choices: your **Background**, which defines your past and gives you three starting skills; and your **Traits**, which add unique, flavorful (and sometimes challenging!) quirks to your character. These initial decisions, combined with the skills you choose to learn as you level up, will determine whether you become a feared pirate, a legendary explorer, a master of persuasion, or a scientific genius who can craft the most advanced gear in the galaxy.
This build planner is your personal Constellation guide, designed to help you chart a course for your character's development. It's a space for "theory-crafting"—a place to experiment with different ideas and combinations to see how they fit together, all without the commitment of starting a new game. Want to see if the "Bounty Hunter" background synergizes well with a deep investment in the Tech tree? Curious about how many points it takes to unlock the master-tier Science skills? This is the place to find out. You can map out your entire skill progression, from level 1 to 100 and beyond, ensuring that every choice you make is part of a grander design for your ultimate Starfield adventurer.
How to Chart Your Course
Designing your perfect character is as simple as plotting a course to a new star system:
- Select Your Origin Story: At the top of the page, use the dropdown menus to pick your Background and up to three Traits. Your selected Background will automatically highlight your three free starting skills in the trees below.
- Invest in Your Future: Click on any skill in the five trees to spend a skill point and increase its rank. To unlock a new tier of skills, you first have to spend a certain number of points in the tiers above it within the same tree. The tool will handle all the locking and unlocking for you!
- Right-Click to Respec: Made a mistake? No problem! Simply right-click on a skill to remove one point from it.
- Check Your Vitals: The Summary panel on the right is your character sheet. It updates instantly, showing your current level, total points spent, and a clear breakdown of how many points you've invested in each skill category.
- Share Your Legend: Once you've created a build you love, click the "Copy Share Link" button. This will generate a unique URL for your build that you can save for later or share with friends on Reddit, Discord, or anywhere else!
Tips from a Seasoned Explorer
- Play to Your Strengths: Your Background gives you a head start. If you choose "Cyber Runner," you begin with Stealth, Security, and Theft. It's a great idea to lean into that and continue investing points in the Social tree to become the ultimate shadow operative.
- Don't Neglect Your Ship: The Tech tree is arguably one of the most important in the game. Skills like "Piloting" (for flying better ships), "Targeting Control Systems" (for a huge advantage in space combat), and "Starship Design" are essential for keeping your vessel space-worthy and formidable.
- Balance is Overrated (Sometimes): While it's tempting to be a jack-of-all-trades, specializing early is often more powerful. Rushing to unlock the master-tier skills in one or two trees can make you incredibly effective in your chosen field much faster than spreading your points thinly across all five categories.
- Think About Your Traits: Traits add amazing flavor. "Kid Stuff" gives you a unique home and relationship with your parents, while "Wanted" adds a fun (and dangerous) element of being hunted. Pick traits that sound fun to you and enhance the role-playing experience you want to have.
