Expected Route Value
Slay the Spire Route Optimization Math
Winning consistently in Slay the Spire is not just about deck building; it is about extracting maximum value from the map. The Expected Value (EV) of a route dictates how strong you will be when facing the Act Boss. If you path through zero Elites, you will arrive at the Boss severely under-powered, missing crucial Relics and Rare cards.
The HP Economy
Your Health (HP) is a resource. You spend HP to kill Elites and gain Relics. The goal is to spend just enough HP to survive, maximizing the number of Elites you can take. If you take too much "chip damage" from Normal Enemies, you are forced to Rest at Campfires instead of Smithing (upgrading cards). An forced Rest is functionally the loss of a permanent card upgrade.
- Normal Enemy: ~6 HP Loss
- Elite Enemy: ~25 HP Loss
- Unknown Node: ~4 HP Loss (Average of events)
Ascension Modifiers: At A17, Normal enemies hit harder (+20% risk). At A18, Elites hit harder (+30% risk). Our calculator factors in these brutal difficulty spikes.
Extracting Value: Shops and Unknowns
Unknown (?) nodes are highly variable but generally net-positive. They offer free relics, card removals, and gold at the cost of potential HP or curses. Shops are incredibly valuable, but only if you have the gold to spend. Pathing into an early Shop with only 50 Gold is a "dead node." The calculator assumes you use your accumulated Gold at Shops to purchase Relics (~150G average) and Card Removes, adding to your Total Expected Relics.
Why does the calculator say my route is Lethal?
If your Estimated HP Drain far exceeds your Maximum HP (assumed 75) plus the healing provided by your route's Campfires, the math indicates your deck will likely die before reaching the boss. You need to route through fewer Elites or rely heavily on potions.
Do Relics drop from Normal Enemies?
No. Relics only drop from Elites, Bosses, specific Events, and Treasure Chests. You can also purchase them at Shops. Normal enemies only drop Gold, Potions, and Card Rewards.
