Mastering the Sea of Thieves Economy
In Sea of Thieves, digging up treasure is only half the battle. The true wealth of a pirate comes from understanding how to leverage the Trading Company Emissary system and timing your sales to exploit the global Gold Rush mechanics.
The Emissary Multiplier
Voting to raise an Emissary Flag opts you into a high-risk, high-reward system. As you collect loot for your specific faction, your Emissary Grade increases from I to V. Selling loot at Grade I provides no bonus, but reaching Grade V is incredibly lucrative.
Grade I: 1.0x (No bonus)
Grade II: 1.33x (+33% Value)
Grade III: 1.67x (+67% Value)
Grade IV: 2.0x (+100% Value - Double Gold)
Grade V: 2.5x (+150% Value)
Stacking the Gold Rush
Gold Rush is a global event that happens twice a day for one hour. During this window, ALL loot turned into any faction receives a flat 1.5x multiplier. This multiplier does not just apply to the base value; it stacks multiplicatively with your Emissary Bonus.
If you sell a 1,000G Captain's Chest as a Grade V Emissary during Gold Rush, the math looks like this: 1000G × 2.5 (Emissary) × 1.5 (Gold Rush) = 3,750G Total. That is a staggering 3.75x return on a single chest. Patient pirates will stack loot on their ship for hours, waiting for the Gold Rush to begin before selling.
Do Reaper's Bones buy everything?
Yes! The Reaper's Bones at the Reaper's Hideout will accept almost any treasure in the game (chests, skulls, crates). A Grade V Reaper flag provides the 2.5x multiplier to ALL loot types, making it the most universally profitable flag, at the cost of being permanently visible on the map to other players.
Does the Gold Rush affect Doubloons?
No. The Gold Rush multiplier only applies to items sold for Gold. It does not multiply Doubloon payouts (like selling Ashen Tomes or Ritual Skulls) or Ancient Coins.
