About the Military PPM Calculator

Planning a Personally Procured Move (PPM), formerly known as a DITY move? This tool helps you estimate your potential financial incentive and, more importantly, your net profit. Unlike standard calculators that only show the gross incentive, our tool helps you factor in expenses and taxes to answer the big question: Is it worth moving myself?

How to Use This Tool

  • Enter Your Rank & Status: This determines your maximum weight allowance according to the Joint Travel Regulations (JTR).
  • Input Weight & Distance: Enter the estimated weight of your household goods and the distance between your old and new duty stations.
  • Add Expenses: Use the "Expense Tracker" to log costs like truck rentals, packing materials, and fuel. This is crucial for calculating your tax liability.
  • Review Profit: See your estimated "Net Profit" after expenses and the standard 22% federal tax withholding.

Tips for a Successful PPM

1. Weigh Empty, Then Full: Always get a certified weight ticket for your vehicle/trailer empty before you load it, and then full after loading. You need both tickets for reimbursement.

2. Keep All Receipts: While you get the incentive regardless of cost, your expenses reduce your taxable income. Every dollar spent on the move is a dollar you don't pay taxes on.

3. Don't Exceed Your Allowance: The government will only pay up to your weight allowance. If you move 15,000 lbs but are only allowed 11,000 lbs, you pay the difference out of pocket.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 2025 PPM Reimbursement Rate? +
As of the latest guidance, the reimbursement rate is 100% of the Government Constructive Cost (GCC). This means you get paid exactly what it would have cost the government to hire a moving company for you.
How much is the advance operating allowance? +
You can typically request an advance of up to 60% of the estimated incentive to help cover upfront costs like truck rentals and boxes. This must be approved by your transportation office.
Is the profit from a DITY move taxable? +
Yes. The IRS treats the incentive payment as income. However, you can deduct qualified moving expenses. The government will withhold roughly 22% of the profit (Incentive minus Expenses) for federal taxes.
