Library of Babel Tool

Allowed characters: lowercase a-z, space, comma, period.

About The Tool

Inspired by Jorge Luis Borges's famous short story, "The Library of Babel," this tool allows you to find the precise location of any conceivable string of text within that infinite library. The conceptual library contains every possible book of 410 pages, composed of a specific set of characters. This means that everything ever written, and everything that ever could be written, already has a designated place on its shelves. This tool doesn't search a database; it uses a powerful algorithm to calculate the unique "address" of your text—or, conversely, to generate the text from a given address.

How to Use

  1. Find Text in Library: Enter your text into the search box. Ensure you only use lowercase letters (a-z), spaces, commas, and periods. Click "Find Location" to see its exact coordinates.
  2. Find Text from Address: Switch to the "Find Text from Address" tab. Enter a valid library address (Hexagon, Wall, Shelf, Volume, Page) and click "Find Text" to see a preview of the text that begins on that page.
  3. Discover Random Pages: Click the "Show Random Page" button to generate a random address and see the text that exists there. A new discovery every time!

Tips for Exploring

  • Start Small: Try finding your name, a short phrase, or a famous quote to see how the algorithm works.
  • Be Precise: Every single character matters. "Hello world" and "hello world." have completely different addresses in the library.
  • Share Your Findings: The URL automatically updates with your search. You can copy and share the link to show others what you've found.
  • Understand the Scale: While your text is guaranteed to exist, finding a long paragraph means calculating an astronomically large number. Our tool handles this seamlessly, but it illustrates the immense scale of Borges's concept.
