The Math of Torment: How to Optimize Your Build

Halls of Torment is a game where small stat increases compound into massive damage outputs. Understanding the difference between Base Damage, Bonus Damage, and Multistrike is the key to conquering Agony Mode.

💡 The Multistrike Mechanic

Multistrike is one of the most misunderstood stats. It is essentially a "Chance to Double Cast." If you have 20% Multistrike, 20% of your attacks will hit twice instantaneously. If you exceed 100%, you are guaranteed a double hit, with a chance for a triple hit. This scales exceptionally well with "On Hit" effects.

Attack Speed vs. Cooldown

In HoT, "Attack Speed" reduces the cooldown between attacks. A +50% Attack Speed bonus doesn't mean you attack 50% faster; it means your attack interval is divided by 1.5. This results in diminishing returns if you stack it too high without increasing damage.

Critical Hit Breakpoints

Base Crit Damage is usually 200% (x2.0). However, the "Critical Bonus" stat is additive to a modifier, not the multiplier itself. For example, +50% Crit Bonus usually results in a x2.5 multiplier (2.0 Base + 0.5). High crit builds benefit massively from the Archer's Mark trait or the Ring of Thunder.

Does Projectile Count affect shotgun skills? +
Yes. For cone attacks (like the Archer or Exterminator), adding projectiles increases the density of the cone, effectively increasing single-target DPS if you are close enough for all projectiles to hit (Shotgunning).
Is Defense or Block better? +
Block is flat damage reduction, while Defense is usually percentage-based mitigation in many RPGs, but in HoT, Defense acts as flat reduction too. Block has a strength cap but regenerates. Generally, mixing both is ideal for tank builds (Shield Maiden).
