Understanding Dota 2 Hero Scaling

In Dota 2, heroes do not just level up and get an arbitrary amount of health and damage. Instead, everything is intricately tied to the game's core Attribute System: Strength, Agility, and Intelligence.

The Attribute Multipliers

Whenever your hero levels up or equips a stat-boosting item, the raw attributes are converted into derived combat statistics using these fixed formulas:

  • 1 Strength = 22 Maximum HP and 0.1 HP Regen per second.
  • 1 Agility = 0.167 Armor (6 Agility = 1 Armor) and 1 Attack Speed.
  • 1 Intelligence = 12 Maximum Mana and 0.05 Mana Regen per second.
Primary Attributes: Every hero has a "Primary" attribute (and recently, Universal heroes have all three). For standard heroes, gaining 1 point in their Primary Attribute also grants them +1 Attack Damage. This is why Agility items give Juggernaut both attack speed and raw damage.

Itemization Synergy

Optimizing your build means balancing raw stats with flat bonuses. For example, buying a Heart of Tarrasque gives +40 Strength (which translates to 880 HP for any hero) PLUS a flat +250 HP bonus, resulting in a massive 1130 total HP. However, buying pure HP items on a hero with zero Armor makes that health very weak to physical damage. Use the calculator above to find the perfect balance between Agility (Armor) and Strength (HP) for your current hero level.

What are Universal Heroes?

Universal heroes do not have a single primary attribute. Instead, they gain 0.7 Attack Damage per point of ANY attribute (Strength, Agility, or Intelligence). This makes "all-stat" items like Eye of Skadi incredibly powerful on them.

Do items give base stats or bonus stats?

Items provide "Bonus" stats. While this doesn't matter for calculating total HP or Mana, it matters for abilities or auras that scale specifically off "Base Stats" (the stats you get strictly from leveling up).
