Mastering City Planning in Civilization

In the Civilization series, maximizing your district adjacency bonuses is the key to out-scaling higher difficulty AI. Placing a Campus next to a mountain range provides a significant early-game Science boost, but truly elite players plan their entire empire's layout to stack "Minor Adjacency" bonuses between districts.

The Rules of Adjacency

Adjacency yields are calculated dynamically based on the 6 hexes immediately surrounding your district. These bonuses are categorized into three tiers:

  • Major Adjacency (+2): Powerful, rare features. For example, a Campus next to a Geothermal Fissure, or a Commercial Hub nestled in a River bend.
  • Standard Adjacency (+1): Common features. A Holy Site next to a Mountain, or an Industrial Zone next to a Strategic Resource.
  • Minor Adjacency (+0.5): The "+1 per 2" rule. Almost every district gains +1 yield for every TWO adjacent districts. Note that City Centers, Aqueducts, and Dams all count as "Districts" for this mathematical threshold!
Policy Card Multipliers:
Later in the game, you unlock specific Policy Cards (e.g., Natural Philosophy for Science, Town Charters for Gold) that provide a +100% Adjacency Bonus. This means a perfectly placed +5 Campus suddenly generates +10 Science per turn, entirely passively. Our calculator allows you to toggle this multiplier to see your true late-game potential.
Do World Wonders count as districts?

No. While World Wonders take up a tile on the map, they do not trigger the standard "+1 per 2 adjacent districts" bonus. However, they do provide a specific +2 adjacency bonus to Theater Squares.

Does the City Center count as a district?

Yes! Placing a district adjacent to your City Center provides exactly 1/2 of a standard district adjacency. If you place a Campus next to a City Center and a Holy Site, you meet the threshold for a +1 Science bonus.
