Mastering the Arena of Valor Damage Formula
In Arena of Valor (AoV), building raw attack damage or ability power is rarely enough to carry a game. Once the enemy team starts buying armor (Physical Defense) or medallions (Magic Defense), your damage output will drop off a cliff. To counter this, you must understand how to properly utilize Armor Pierce items.
The 600 Formula Explained
Every standard MOBA uses a specific mathematical formula to calculate how armor mitigates damage. Arena of Valor utilizes the "600 Formula." This dictates that the percentage of damage mitigated by armor follows a diminishing returns curve.
For example, if an enemy tank has exactly 600 Effective Armor, the multiplier becomes 600 / 1200 = 0.5. This means they will take exactly 50% reduced physical damage from your attacks.
Flat Pierce vs. Percentage Pierce
AoV features two types of penetration: Flat (e.g., Rankbreaker, Flavescent Wood) and Percentage (e.g., Muramasa, Staff of Nuul). The game engine calculates these in a very specific order:
- Flat Pierce is subtracted first.
- Percentage Pierce is applied to the remaining armor.
Because Flat Pierce applies first, it is devastatingly effective against squishy targets (Mages, Marksmen) who only have ~200 base armor. If you have 250 Flat Pierce, you reduce their armor to 0, dealing true damage. However, against a tank with 1000 armor, Flat Pierce barely makes a dent. That's when you must build a Percentage Pierce item like Muramasa (40% Pierce) to strip away hundreds of armor points at once.
Can I reduce enemy armor below 0?
No. Standard Armor Pierce items cannot reduce a target's Effective Defense below 0 to amplify damage. The absolute cap for standard penetration effectiveness is reaching true damage (0 armor).
Do Arcana penetrate armor?
Yes! Pierce Arcana (like Skewer for Physical or Flurry for Magic) provide Flat Pierce that applies exactly the same way as item Flat Pierce. Stacking Pierce Arcana with early-game Pierce items is a common strategy for early jungle snowballing.
Should I buy Rankbreaker AND Muramasa?
Usually, no. Because Flat Pierce is calculated first, buying a Rankbreaker actually reduces the effectiveness of your Muramasa. If an enemy has 500 Armor, Muramasa alone pierces 200. If you buy Rankbreaker (250 flat pierce) first, the enemy drops to 250 armor, and Muramasa now only pierces 100.
