About Anki Deck Tag Cleaner
Managing a large Anki collection can become chaotic. Over time, imported decks introduce inconsistent tagging styles, HTML clutter, and duplicate categories. The Anki Deck Tag Cleaner is a free, browser-based utility designed to streamline your flashcard management workflow.
Whether you are a medical student organizing thousands of cards or a language learner refining your vocabulary decks, this tool helps you standardize your exports before re-importing them into Anki. It runs entirely in your browser, ensuring your data never leaves your device.
How to Use
- Export your Deck: In Anki, go to File > Export. Choose "Notes in Plain Text" (.txt). Ensure "Include tags" is checked.
- Paste or Upload: Copy the content of the text file and paste it into the "Input Data" box above, or use the upload button.
- Configure Settings: Choose your cleaning preferences. You can sort tags, convert them to lowercase, strip HTML from card fields, or remove specific unwanted tags like "leech".
- Process & Import: Click "Process Data". Copy the result or download the file. In Anki, simply Import the cleaned file and choose "Update existing notes" to apply changes.
Key Features
- Privacy First: All processing happens locally via JavaScript. No data is sent to any server.
- Smart Tag Management: Automatically deduplicate, sort, and standardize tag formats.
- HTML Stripping: Clean up messy copy-pasted text by removing bold, italic, and div tags from your card fields.
- Bulk Editing: Add a specific tag to all cards or blacklist tags containing specific words.

How do I update my existing cards?
After downloading the cleaned file, open Anki and select File > Import. Select your file. Important: Ensure the "Update existing notes when first field matches" option is selected. This will update your cards without creating duplicates.
Does this support media files?
This tool processes text data. It does not touch your media files. However, the references to media (like <img src="...">) in your cards are preserved unless you choose to strip HTML, which might remove image tags depending on settings.
