What Are Trade Routes? (A Simple Guide)

Welcome, Viceroy! In the unforgiving world of Against the Storm, your settlement is a tiny beacon of hope against an endless, hostile forest. To survive and please the Scorched Queen, you need a lifeline to the outside world, and that lifeline is **trade**. By crafting valuable goods—like warm coats, tasty jerky, or fine ale—and selling them to the traders who brave the storm to visit you, you can earn **Amber**. Amber is more than just money; it's your key to victory. You can use it to buy powerful new building blueprints, acquire essential resources you can't find in the wilderness, and, most importantly, purchase Reputation points directly to secure your win.

Mastering the art of the deal is one of the most crucial skills in the game, especially as you climb to higher difficulties. But it's not as simple as just selling whatever you have. You have to consider who you're selling to, your relationship (or "Standing") with them, and even the forest's current anger (its "Hostility"). This calculator is designed to be your personal ledger and strategic advisor. It takes all the complicated math off your plate, letting you quickly figure out the true profitability of any trade. It doesn't just show you the sale price; it shows you the real **Net Profit** after the forest takes its cut. It's about empowering you to make the smartest possible decisions, turning your humble settlement into a thriving economic powerhouse that can weather any storm.

How to Use the Calculator

Calculating the true value of your trade routes is a fast, real-time process:

  1. Select Your Goods & Quantity: Choose the item you plan to sell from the dropdown menu and enter how many you're selling.
  2. Choose the Trader: Different traders visit your town. Select the one who is currently at your Trading Post to see their specific prices.
  3. Set Your Standing: As you trade more with a merchant, your Standing with them increases, giving you better prices. Select your current Standing level here.
  4. Enter Hostility:** This is a crucial step! Enter your current Hostility of the Forest level. This determines the "tax" the forest takes from your profits.
  5. Check for Perks:** If you have a Cornerstone or other bonus that gives you a "Pack of Goods," check the box to apply that powerful multiplier.

The calculator will instantly update with the **Gross Amber Value** of the sale, the **Hostility Cost**, and your final **Net Profit**, giving you a complete picture of the deal.

Tips for Becoming a Master Trader

  • Net Profit is All That Matters:** Don't be fooled by a high sale price! A 50 Amber trade at Hostility 3 is much worse than a 40 Amber trade at Hostility 0. Always look at the **Net Profit** to understand the real value of a trade. This is the single most important tip for high-level play.
  • **Know Your Customers:** Every trader is different. The Smoldering City pays extra for luxury goods like Coats and Ale, while the Vanguard of the Forsaken pays a bit more for everything. Selling the right goods to the right trader is key to maximizing your income.
  • **Standing is an Investment:** Increasing your Standing with a trader might seem slow, but it's a powerful long-term investment. Each level gives you a permanent bonus to the value of all goods you sell to them, which adds up to a massive amount of Amber over the course of a long game.
  • **Manage Your Hostility:** Since Hostility acts as a direct tax on your trade income, keeping it low is essential for a trade-focused settlement. Be mindful of opening too many glades or having too many villagers before your economy is ready to handle the increased pressure.
